Hill Hails China Deal and USMCA as Major Victory for Arkansas Washington, January 16, 2020 WASHINGTON D.C. — Following the passage of the United States Mexico Canada Agreement (USMCA) in the Senate and after the U.S. and China signed a Phase One trade deal, Congressman French Hill (AR-02) released the following statement: “The Phase One deal between the United States and China is a positive step towards opening China’s markets, protecting intellectual property, and stopping Chinese coercion for technology transfer. It’s a win for Arkansas’s farmers, ranchers, and manufacturers. Likewise, Canada and Mexico are Arkansas’s largest trading partners and the U.S. Senate’s overwhelming approval of USMCA is a smart and effective update to the 1994 North American Free Trade Agreement,” said Congressman Hill. “Both the China deal and the completion of USMCA send a positive signal around the world that America is open for business, and that with a fair and open trading system, no one will outcompete the American farmer, manufacturer, or entrepreneur. It’s important that our officials monitor strict enforcement with the terms of the China Phase One deal. The president’s maintaining a level of tariffs on some Chinese products better ensures compliance with this Phase One arrangement and provides a significant incentive to negotiate in good faith on a second phase.” |
