Dozens from the community came out Friday to celebrate Veterans Day at Julie’s Sweet Shoppe and Bakery in Conway. Julie Goodnight, owner, hosted the event for three years in her new business, but began the annual celebration in 2005 when she worked at Ed’s Bakery on Oak Street. She said the tradition began after she heard war stories while listening to American Family Radio. She knew both of her grandfathers served in World War II, but realized they never told her any stories about it. Goodnight... Read more

Banking industry lobbyists and representatives are practically salivating over the election results, convinced that Republican control of the White House and Congress will finally give them the opportunity to roll back key parts of the Dodd-Frank Act. President-elect Donald Trump's transition team declared war Thursday on the 2010 financial reform law, vowing to "dismantle" it while blaming the law for slow economic growth. "The Dodd-Frank economy does not work for working people," the transitio... Read more

  • Hill: Addressing poverty 'A Better Way'
Posted in In the News on November 2, 2016 | Preview rr

President Lyndon Johnson introduced the War on Poverty to the nation 52 years ago. Designed as a comprehensive social welfare initiative, the program initially included funding for food stamps, school districts, and Medicare and Medicaid. Although many of these programs have been useful, it would be hard to make a legitimate case that their efficiency matches the total investment by the taxpayers. The Census Bureau estimates that the poverty rate has fallen from 19 percent in 1964 to 15 percent ... Read more

  • Surprise! Republican Leads the Fight Against Mass Imprisonment of Black Men

Political leaders such as Donald Trump, make it really easy for people such as me, a 21-year-old surrounded by liberals, to overgeneralize the Republican party as either racist, or racially insensitive. Certainly the fact that the prison system is warehousing black men, as Michelle Alexander has pointed out in her book, The New Jim Crow, isn’t usually at the list of Republican concerns. But Rep French Hill, a deep-dyed conservative from Arkansas, changed my stereotypes about this issue. This Sou... Read more
