Gov. Hutchinson announces initiative to support military

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) - With the constant threat of budget cuts hanging over today's military, Governor Asa Hutchinson is looking to help keep the state's bases as strong economic engines for their community by being proactive.

There is no imminent threat economically to Arkansas military installations, but Representative French Hill urged the governor to get out front early.

At a ceremony on Monday at Camp Robinson, the governor made an announcement about the creation of a military affairs committee.

It will run out of the state's economic development office and will have a mix of public, private and military members. It will also get 4$400,000 from the governor's discretionary fund to get off the ground.

The idea is to foster strong ties between bases and the surrounding areas and also get Washington's attention for the future.

"The main message is: we are committed to support our military installations. We will find the tools necessary to get that done and the resources here in Arkansas," said Hutchinson.

Construction executive Brad Hegeman will head the committee, and Lieutenant Governor Tim Griffin is also involved.

Hutchinson was asked if the recent loss of a military contract for Lockheed Martin in Camden played any role, and he said no.

But he did say that miss shows the benefits of the state working with local military to win those deals.

He thinks getting everyone on the same team puts the best possible showcase before the decision makers at the Pentagon.
