RELEASE: REP. HILL STATEMENT ON CHINESE CYBER ATTACK ON U.S. TREASURY
WASHINGTON, D.C.,
December 31, 2024
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rep. French Hill (AR-02) today released the following statement after it was publicly reported that China was behind a cyber attack at the U.S. Treasury. “The risk of China or other malign actors hacking U.S. government agencies has been apparent over and over again. Treasury is another target in a long line of other instances, including at the Office of Personnel Management, Internal Revenue Service, and Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. State and Non-State led cyber attacks like this prove that the privacy of Americans remains at risk. This is exactly why I am opposed to having more large federal government databases like the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network's (FinCEN) Beneficial Ownership Information (BOI), the Consolidated Audit Trail (CAT) at the Securities and Exchange Commission, or the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau without ironclad protection of Personally Identifiable Information (PII) and liability protection. Congress will look into this and work with the incoming Trump Administration on investigating cybersecurity matters to ensure all Americans have security over their privacy like they deserve.” |
