WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rep. French Hill (AR-02) today released the following statement after the collapse of the Assad regime.

“The world has witnessed what we knew all along – without Bashar al-Assad being propped up by Russia and Iran, he and his regime have no power. Through my years of extensive work in Congress to combat the Assad regime, I have seen firsthand the death and destruction Assad has caused his own innocent citizens who have lived through hell for the past 13 years.

“During my years-long fight to combat the illicit proliferation of Assad’s illicit source of funding, producing and smuggling captagon, I watched as this drug devastated families in the region and fueled his terror partnership with Hezbollah and Iran with billions in illegal funding.  As Co-Chair of the Hostage Task Force in the House, I saw the agony painted on the faces of the American families who lost their loved one because Assad and his henchmen brutally murdered them. Through the eyes of my Syrian-American constituents, I painfully watched as their families and fellow Syrians were ripped from their homes and their country destroyed from bombs and other acts of war.

“Since the start of the war, we have only heard the demands of ‘Assad or we burn the country.’ Today, the country finally may have stopped burning. The United States will need to work with our regional partners to pursue the merits of UN Security Council Resolution 2254, which calls for a free and democratic Syria.”
