RELEASE: REPS. HILL, BOYLE STATEMENT ON THE EGYPTIAN FOREIGN MINISTER’S RECKLESS MEETING WITH SYRIAN PRESIDENT BASHAR AL-ASSAD

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Reps. French Hill (AR-02) and Brendan Boyle (PA-02), co-chairs of the Friends of a Free, Stable, and Democratic Syria Caucus, today released the following statement in response to Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry’s reckless meeting with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

“The Egyptian Foreign Minister’s meeting with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad furthers Assad’s ability to leverage the recent devastating earthquake to manipulate his way back into the Arab League and capitalize on the natural disaster to gain sympathy from global leaders. Throughout this tragedy, Assad’s forces have continued to conduct artillery and missile attacks on areas hit the hardest by the earthquake in Northwest Syria. No sovereign nation should fall for Assad’s feigned humility or need for help, especially a U.S. ally like Egypt. Assad remains a barbarous murderer of his own people and must remain an international pariah for the well documented and indisputable war crimes his regime has committed for nearly twelve years.”
