RELEASE: Rep. French Hill, Congressional Rep to UN, Urges President Biden to Act to Counter Russia LITTLE ROCK, AR – Rep. French Hill (AR-02), currently serving as Congressional Representative to the 76th United Nations General Assembly, called upon President Biden to take the necessary steps to counter Russia’s aggression and ensure Ukraine’s autonomy. Rep. Hill stated, “I believe a strong and U.S.-led effort in the UN represents one piece of the full range of tools the U.S. government should have already implemented to address the crisis Russia has created in Eastern Europe.” Rep. Hill continued, “There are already two [UN] Security Council resolutions touching on Russian aggression in Ukraine from 2014, Resolution 2166 concerning the downing of flight MH17 over Ukraine, and Resolution 2202 supporting the Minsk Agreements of 2014, which were designed to deescalate conflict in eastern Ukraine at that time. I believe that these efforts should be updated and expanded upon, as Russian actions thus far have violated the Minsk Agreements, and perhaps by extension Resolution 2202.” Rep. Hill concluded, “That is why it is critical we as a nation take every available option to counter Russia’s aggression, especially at the UN, and ensure Ukraine’s continued self-determination.” To read the full letter, click here. Further Background: Rep. Hill serves as one of two Congressional Representatives to the 76th UN General Assembly. The UN General Assembly annual session is held in New York City each year. The President typically appoints one Democrat and one Republican to serve as U.S. representatives to the session, alternating each year between the House and Senate. Congressional representation has a long history at the UN going back to the 1945 San Francisco Conference on International Organization that led to the adoption of the UN Charter. Following the adoption of the charter, Congress passed the United Nations Participation Act, to provide legislative authority for U.S. engagement in the UN. |
