Rep. French Hill Statement on Deteriorating Situation in Afghanistan
LITTLE ROCK, AR – Rep. French Hill (AR-02) issued the following statement as tensions in Afghanistan rise with the Taliban seizing control of cities across the region after President Biden's decision to withdraw U.S. troops. “I am deeply troubled by the threat to America and her allies that President Biden created with his hasty and poorly executed withdrawal from Afghanistan. He handed the Taliban’s terrorist regime free reign over the country. The human tragedy unfolding before the world’s eyes was predictable, and has already resulted in the deaths of the innocent Afghan people and will increase threats to the United States and regional peace and stability. "During my 2015 visit to Kabul, I witnessed firsthand Afghanistan’s steps toward democracy, economic growth, and social progress with the help of America and without the brutal control of the Taliban. Young women like Naheed Esar, a native of Jalalabad, Afghanistan, whom I was able to take tea with, and the memory of the thousands of service members who gave the ultimate sacrifice in support of denying the terrorists a safe haven deserve better than this. The United States and our NATO allies held the line in Afghanistan to ensure counter terrorism operation success, prohibit a terrorist state formation, and aid stability in this troubled region, but President Biden’s decision to withdraw without an adequate plan demonstrates strategic and tactical incompetence." |
