Rep. Hill Rejects House Democrat Attacks on Law-Abiding Citizens

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rep. French Hill (AR-02) issued the following statement today after voting against House Democrat attacks on law-abiding citizens:

“Republicans and Democrats share a common goal – ending gun violence. From strengthening the National Instant Background Check System and improving school security in Arkansas to delivering mental health resources to prevent gun violence, I have consistently supported meaningful solutions that reduce gun violence. I did not support the House Democrat bills because unfortunately nothing in either of the bills would have prevented any previous mass shooting and instead, they further infringe upon the constitutional rights of law-abiding gun owners.”

Further background on measures that Rep. Hill supported to end gun violence:

  • The Fix NICS Act, signed into law in December of 2017, addresses the shortcomings of the National Instant Criminal Background Check System. This legislation makes it mandatory for all federal agencies to report criminal convictions to the Attorney General, so those convictions are put into the background check system.
  • The STOP School Violence Act of 2018 makes our schools safer by providing resources to harden schools as well as to train students, teachers, and local law enforcement so they can help stop school violence before it happens.
  • The 21st Century Cures Act, which was signed in December 2016, is one of the most significant reforms to the mental health system in a decade.
  • After the House passed legislation in 2017, the Trump Administration officially banned bump stocks in December 2018.
