Hill Statement on Janet Yellen’s Nomination to Serve as Secretary of the Treasury Department

Little Rock, Ark. — Today, Rep. French Hill (AR-02) issued the following statement about former Federal Reserve Chairwoman Janet Yellen's nomination to lead the Treasury Department by Vice President Joe Biden:
“By way of public policy leadership and experience, Janet Yellen is well qualified to be nominated as Treasury Secretary. In her final two years as Federal Reserve chair, I found her forthright and focused. “In office, she will confront a global economic crisis brought about by COVID-19. If confirmed, she must be a voice for policies that ensure that the American economy continues its return to pre-pandemic strength. Large tax burden increases on hard working taxpayers, businesses, and entrepreneurs will slow the recovery, as will a growing tangle of new Washington mandates and regulations. “Her second significant challenge will be the insatiable appetite of those left of center policy makers to demand that only the federal government can solve all social and economic problems by spending ever more taxpayer money. As she must lead on growth, Dr. Yellen must also lead the administration’s return to responsible post-pandemic federal budgets. “Finally, as a former chair of the Federal Reserve, hers can be a voice of constraint from the calls for the Fed to abandon its focused dual mandate of price stability and full employment, and instead, lend money directly to states and municipalities, become a sort of ‘climate police’ or find no limit to the government debt it can acquire.” |
