Arkansas delegates reflect on life of John Walker, flags ordered at half-staff
KATV 10/28/19 LITTLE ROCK (KATV) — Politicians from both sides of the aisle reflected on John Walker's death, remembering the civil rights attorney as a man who led with passion and conviction. "Whether he agreed with your politics or not he was always a friend he was always somebody that was gracious and understood that we could differ but at the same time we could get along and that's a really great example and legacy that he left," said Gov. Asa Hutchinson. Despite not seeing eye to eye on every issue, Hutchinson believes Walker is a man whose decorum should be replicated from both political parties. "He fought hard but he was always civil in the way he conducted himself and that's really again an example of the next generation," Hutchinson said. The governor's last interaction with Walker was with the black legislative caucus in the latest legislative session. He remembers Walker possessed strong convictions as he spoke on particular matters. "He was a good listener then he'd always make some astute observations and make his points rather pointedly," Hutchinson said. State Rep. Andrew Collins and Walker walked the halls of the Arkansas Capitol together. Both Democrats, Collins and Walker didn't always agree on legislation, in particular, the recent highway funding bill. However, Collins always admired Walker's ability to articulate his arguments with grace. "Sometimes he would speak against a bill and be the only person to speak against it. Sometimes he'd be the only to vote against a bill and that's just who he was. He was happy to stand up for what he thought was right," Collins said. "John always drove the conversation forward when he addressed an issue." Rep. French Hill released a statement on Twitter stating: "Martha and I offer our deepest condolences to the Walker family at this sudden loss. John Walker leaves behind an eternal legacy as a champion of civil rights. Arkansans live in a better world today because of his commitment to justice and equality for all." Mayor Frank Scott Jr. also expressed his condolences: Governor Asa Hutchinson ordered all flags to be flown at half-staff beginning 10/29 in honor of Walker's life. |
