WHITE HALL, Ark. (KTHV) - In the wake of the mass shooting at a community college in Oregon earlier this month, President Obama asked voters to consider their local lawmaker's views on guns and gun violence. Congressman French Hill returned home this weekend and stated clearly where he stands. He stood firmly with The National Rifle Association at the shooting range, Last Resort Firearms Training. Sunday was organized as a fundraiser for the national organization. "I think a lot of people are not comfortable with firearms because our society is a lot more urbanized now and people don't have comfort," said Hill. He explained people should get proper training to understand the benefits granted to Americans in the U.S. Constitution. He also stressed the safety aspects of owning a firearm. When it comes to training, there are certain people that would benefit from getting a few pointers. "Personal firearms, owned by a mom or a dad in a household for family protection," said Hill. Ed Monk is the owner of the range as well as an army veteran, and he also has a strong stance on owning firearms. "Our rights make us free, which a lot of people here in this country take for granted, because we've always had them." After being on active duty for more than 24 years in the Army, "I've been overseas, where most of the people don't have the rights that we have." Monk explained, that just like every other right, a person isn't forced to exercise the rights granted to them. It's simply a choice that is yours, and yours only. "Our founders believed you had rights at birth that you were born with. It's not something the government gives you, it's something that the government takes away." |
