Today, the House passed H.R. 5711, to prohibit the Secretary of the Treasury from authorizing certain transactions by a U.S. financial institution in connection with the export or re-export of a commercial passenger aircraft to the Islamic Republic of Iran, by a vote of 243-174. Prior to the vote, Congressman French Hill (AR-02) spoke on the House Floor, urging his colleagues to support passage of the bill. Watch Congressman Hill’s Floor Speech on H.R. 5711 Hill said: “I was proud to be a member of the Financial Services Committee’s Task Force to Investigate Terrorism Financing. During our hearings, we heard numerous witnesses describe Iran’s support for terrorism and other evil activities. It is staggering to hear as we sit here tonight that we have a member of the other party suggest that Iran is a friend to the United States, there is no friendship between the United States and Iran…. “This legislation is about the belief that the United States should not directly support terrorism and the killing of innocent civilians. It is the mission of Iran to use these aircraft for nefarious purposes. We are already have that guilt on our hands by the release of $100 billion and $1.7 billion in cash, let’s not compound the errors of the past by opposing this bill which will [result in limited] taxpayers’ risk and our financial sector’s risk by financing aircraft to Iran.” ### |
