It is one of my greatest privileges as a Member of Congress to annually nominate students to the United States Service Academies. Over the last four years, I’ve had the privilege of nominating over 99 students who have applied to attend the U.S. Naval Academy, the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, the U.S. Air Force Academy, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, and the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. In a state with a population of just under three million, I am proud to know that there are countless students representing Arkansans at the service academies. This is a testament to the impressive students graduating from our high schools. The honor of attending a service academy comes with the obligation and commitment to serve in the military for a minimum of five years upon graduation. For more information on how to obtain a Congressional Nomination, or on how to apply to one of our nation's service academies, please contact Anna Reckling in my Little Rock office. She can be reached by phone at (501) 324-5941 or by email at Anna.Reckling@mail.house.gov. To apply for a Military Academy Nomination from my office, please complete this form and email it to AR02AcademyApplications@mail.house.gov.
Recently, I gave a final salute on the House Floor to the service of a man who loved the United States and devoted his life to her service: Lt. Gen. Brent Scowcroft. His devoted friends, colleagues, and loyal, long-time staff members are left with terrific memories of a man who presidents trusted with his wise counsel. Lt. Gen. Scowcroft was the only American to serve two presidents - President Gerald Ford and George H. W. Bush - as their national security advisor. In September 1991, President Bush asked me to leave from the Treasury to join the White House staff directing his Economic Policy Council. Gen. Scowcroft was a member of that group. He was renowned among his colleagues for his long hours, dedicated work, and the daily care for his long-ailing beloved wife. That made late afternoon meetings a bit of a struggle. President Bush initiated the "Scowcroft Award" given to that cabinet secretary or senior staffer that nodded off in a meeting in, as a former staffer, now president of the Council of Foreign Relations, Richard Haass, describes the “most ostentatious” manner. One of those nod-offs in the Roosevelt Room occurred with his head resting on my shoulder! I extend my heartfelt condolences to Lt. Gen. Scowcroft's family and his scores of friends around the world.
The resilience our economy has shown in the face of this health crisis is a testament to its unprecedented strength. As part of the House Republicans Commitment to America and plan to rebuild our economy back to its historic levels, we will get America back to work and add ten million new, well-paid jobs. Additionally, we will continue to support local businesses with over $200 billion in forgivable PPP loans. To help those who need it most, we will maintain the Opportunity Zone credits that generate $10 billion a year in poor communities and extend the $2,000 child tax credit program. And to ensure the long-term growth of the economy, we will continue tax policies that increase take-home pay for workers and encourage innovation.
Each year, World Habitat Day is recognized on the first Monday of October. On this day, we reflect on the state of our towns and cities and the basic right of all to adequate shelter. Over the years, I have been proud to partner with Habitat for Humanity of Central Arkansas to help families in our community achieve their dream of homeownership. This week, as we celebrated World Habitat Day, I was reminded of participating in a “wall-raising” event several years ago and what it meant to me. This house provided Shalaniece Floyd, a 30-year-old single mother of two, a safe and stable place for her family to live. I thank everyone who donates their time and resources in service to deserving families in Arkansas. It is my honor to represent you in Congress. Please contact me at (501) 324-5941 or Hill.House.Gov if I may be of service to you. Sincerely, Representative French Hill |
