Dear Friends,
On Monday, the nation woke to devastating news of a massacre in Las Vegas. I was deeply saddened by this attack born of evil, and Martha and I continue to pray for the families of the 58 killed and nearly 500 wounded.
In the days that followed, we saw footage of our first responders and others running toward danger to save lives. I have the utmost gratitude and admiration for these first responders as well as the medical staff treating the wounded in the immediate aftermath of the chaos.
Across the nation, flags were at half-mast in honor and reflection of the lives lost and those injured. Our nation must now heal from this horror and work together for wisdom on how to identify and do our best to stop this kind of mass killer.
On Thursday, I talked with Kevin Miller on KARN about this tragedy and how to keep guns out of the hands of terrorists, criminals, and the mentally ill. To listen, click here.
Kevin and I also discussed the House tax reform plan and how it will bring job creators back to the United States and make our business taxation system more competitive – encouraging investment here at home and enhance economic growth and create jobs.
Right now, Americans spend more than 6 billion hours filling out their tax forms every year. This is a waste of time. Our plan simplifies our outdated tax code by collapsing the rates for personal taxation and giving a tax break for those up and down the income ladder who work and pay into our tax system. Americans will be able to keep more of their hard-earned money to invest it in their families and their futures.
We achieved another milestone this week. After passing all of our twelve Appropriations bills on time, we passed the House Budget. This budget achieves $6.5 trillion in deficit reduction and sets our overall discretionary spending at $1.132 trillion.
More importantly, the Budget tackles the key drivers of our debt: mandatory spending. This is a bold step. We are making good on our promise to responsibly govern and balance our budget within ten years.
Finally, this week, I introduced a bill that will save all new Arkansasan and American homeowners money.
A massive, complex rule known as TRID (TILA RESPA Integrated Disclosure) has been hindering financial institutions’ ability to share accurate information with consumers during the mortgage closing process. The bill will tell to-be homeowners the true cost of their title insurance premiums when they purchase a home.
I was proud to work with my colleague, Rep. Ruben Kihuen (D-NV) on this bill.
As we start the new week, please continue to pray for Las Vegas
Sincerely,
Representative French Hill
