Dear Friend,
In Arkansas, 547 people died of a drug overdose in 2020 – a 55% increase from 2019. The opioid crisis is affecting more than just Arkansas: nationwide, 90,000 Americans were lost to overdoses in 2020 alone.
This is a crisis.
That’s why I acted and introduced the bipartisan Preventing Overdoses and Saving Lives Act along with my colleague Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-MI).
Our bill would encourage the life-saving drug naloxone be co-prescribed along with required opioids so that it will be available in an emergency. It also establishes a grant program to research and develop a strategic plan on the opioid crisis as well as encourage co-prescribing. Co-prescribing can save lives in that when you’re prescribed an opioid, you’re also prescribed an opioid reversal drug. I have seen firsthand how successful co-prescribing has been in Arkansas, and I wanted to take that to the national level.
