Dear Friends,

This week, I had the pleasure of welcoming to central Arkansas the Director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), Kathy Kraninger. The CFPB is charged with safeguarding consumers as they consider financial products and services.

As a member of the House Financial Services Committee, my work has included protecting Arkansas consumers. I have heard concerns over predatory lending, which has no place in Arkansas. I am committed to protecting Arkansans and their financial transactions – from buying a car or home to starting a business and purchasing equipment.

To help Arkansans get answer to their questions, I hosted a Public Consumer Listening Session to help consumers learn how to leverage state and local resources to keep bad actors at bay. My guests included Director Kraninger and Chuck Harder, Deputy Attorney General of Arkansas.

The speakers discussed consumer protection regulations and threats and the steps they are taking to educate the public.

I also hosted a
Community Bank Roundtable where Director Kraninger heard from local Arkansas community bankers. This is crucial to ensuring that our federal government is in tune with the financial institutions serving Arkansas communities and is not placing undue burdens on them. As a former community banker, I know each of these banks is vital to the people of Arkansas and giving them the ability to serve their customers as they know best will help Arkansans gain access to the loans, credit, and services that they need.

It’s my honor to serve as your voice in Congress and to the federal government, and I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,
Representative French Hill

Trade wins for Arkansas agriculture

Recently, the United States and China signed a Phase One trade deal. China has pledged to increase its import of American exports by $200 billion and to change unfair intellectual property policies.

This trade deal with China was followed by even more good news for Arkansans with the Senate’s bipartisan passage of the United States Mexico Canada Agreement (USMCA), which will replace the outdated North America Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

The Phase One deal between the United States and China is a positive step towards opening China's markets to more U.S. products while protecting intellectual property and stopping Chinese coercion for technology transfer. It's a win for Arkansas's farmers, ranchers, and manufacturers.

Likewise, Canada and Mexico are Arkansas's largest trading partners, and the U.S. Senate’s overwhelming approval of USMCA is a smart and effective update to the 1994 North American Free Trade Agreement. I look forward to seeing the president sign this beneficial deal into law in the coming days.

Both the China deal and the completion of USMCA send a positive signal around the world that America is open for business, and that with a fair and open trading system, no one will outcompete the American farmer, manufacturer, or entrepreneur. It's important that our officials monitor strict enforcement with the terms of the China Phase One deal. The president’s maintaining a level of tariffs on some Chinese products better ensures compliance with this Phase One arrangement and provides a significant incentive to negotiate in good faith on a second phase.
