Dear Friends,

Whether or not Democratic leaders want to acknowledge the facts, the reality is that we have a security crisis at our southwest border. I've visited the border numerous times and seen with my own eyes the devastating human cost of having a porous border.

By the Numbers:
  • In 2018, 17,0000 adults with criminal records were arrested by Customs and Border Protection.
  • 6,000 gang members, including MS-13, have been apprehended at the border and removed by ICE.
  • In four CBP sectors where physical barriers have been expanded (El Paso, Yuma, Tucson, and San Diego) illegal traffic has dropped by at least 90%.
  • In 2018, immigration courts had a backlog of more than 786,000 pending cases.
Security experts agree that cracking down on illegal immigration, the drug trade, and human trafficking requires more miles of physical border barrier, enhanced technology, and more personnel.

It's increasingly frustrating to me that we cannot come together and find a practical solution to this challenge. Republicans have presented solutions, but they were rejected last year by House and Senate members who don't support commonsense border security.

Republicans are ready and willing to come to the table to negotiate in good faith with Democratic leadership. If we put the safety of the American people before political gamesmanship, I’m confident that we can find a practical solution that will save lives and end the partial government shutdown.

Bill to Enhance Arkansas's Flatside Wilderness Becomes Law
Great news! My bill to enhance one of Arkansas’s most unspoiled landscapes, Flatside Wilderness, has been signed into law! As an avid outdoorsman, I have often hiked through these woods and I'm excited that people across Arkansas can now enjoy more of our state's natural and wild qualities, all while boosting the local economy.

I appreciate Representative Bruce Westerman and Senator John Boozman for their efforts in helping me get my legislation across the finish line! Click HERE to learn more.

Learning from the Mistakes of the Past in Syria
I was delighted to learn this week that President Trump has reflected on his initial instinct to pull our 2000 soldiers out of eastern Syria based on his conclusion that ISIS is defeated. Instead, he is ordering a withdrawal “at a proper pace” consistent with American objectives. In order to ensure a safe American homeland and progress towards regional stability, America must:

1.) Develop a strategy to eliminate ISIS from Northeast Syria along the lower Euphrates Valley at the border of Syria and Iraq.
2.) Block Iran from gaining a larger strategic advantage in the region.
3.) Help cultivate peace and stability in Syria.

Click HERE or on the picture above to watch my remarks about how we achieve these three goals and better protect not only American interests in the Middle East, but also the people living in this war-torn part of the world.

Local Students Offered Appointments to U.S. Military Academies
One of the most important responsibilities I have as a member of Congress is to nominate elite men and women to join the ranks of the greatest military academies in the world. This week, it was my great honor to inform three outstanding Little Rock students that they had been offered appointments to U.S. Military Academies.

Congratulations to Annie Quo from Mount St. Mary’s Academy and Ayham Issac from Catholic High School on accepting their appointments to the U.S. Naval Academy. Congratulations to Trinity Abdulkhalik from Little Rock Christian Academy on accepting her appointment to the U.S. Air Force Academy. Click on the picture above to watch video of the moment Annie Quo found out that she was offered her appointment to the Naval Academy.

Thank you for taking time to keep up with the work I'm doing on your behalf. If I can be of any assistance to you or your family, please reach out to my office at (501) 324-5941 or Hill.House.Gov

Sincerely,

Representative French Hill
