Dear Friends,
This week in central Arkansas and Washington was informative and productive as I met with job creators, our brave heroes, future leaders at Springhill Elementary School in Greenbrier, and others.
It is also with heavy hearts that Martha and I mourn the passing of a loyal friend, mentor, and faithful servant, President George H.W. Bush. We lift up the Bush family during this time of grieving and honor the remarkable life and legacy of a strong leader and diplomat, a great father, and an American patriot.
In our early careers, Martha and I treasured working for President George H.W. Bush on his campaigns and the humbling responsibility of serving on his White House staff. We were grateful for his daily example of goofy humor, courtesy, friendship, and passion for writing handwritten thank-you notes. Truly, President George H.W. Bush and Mrs. Bush were the ideal neighbors, members of the PTA, and the answer to the question on that common form at school or work, ‘in case of emergency, please call..." We loved him very much.
Sharing Personal Stories of President George H.W. Bush
I joined Ana Cabrera on CNN Saturday night and shared personal stories of my interactions and experiences working with President George H.W. Bush. We mourn his death but celebrate his life. He was a man who possessed a volunteer spirit and that of service above self. Watch here.
Visiting with Conway's Manufacturers
I started off my week touring the Virco headquarters in Conway with Steve Presley, the Vice President and General Manager, and his leadership team. I had the chance to see how their 100 percent American made products were crafted before they are sent out to schools all over Arkansas and the country. We talked about how tariffs are impacting their facilities and how I can better help support our local manufacturers as their representative in Congress.
Meeting with Future Leaders at Springhill Elementary
On Monday, it was a joy to speak with Springhill Elementary School's third grade class about the job and responsibilities of Representatives in Congress. They recently finished their U.S. Government module and had a lot of questions for me ranging from what I do in my free time, my favorite presidents, and how I spend my days while I am in D.C. representing them. These Arkansas students from Greenbrier are an impressive group.
Honoring our Veterans at the Nabholz Wall of Honor
Top picture, left to right: Rep. Hill, Charles Nabholz (founder, Nabholz Properties), FR Anthony Robbins (St. Joseph's Parish), Greg Williams (CEO, Nabholz), and Brad Hegeman (COO, Nabholz). Bottom picture, left to right: Rep. Hill, Don Greenland (Strategic Growth Officer, Nabholz), Mark Berry (Adjutant General, Arkansas National Guard), and Charles Nabholz.
It was an honor to attend the unveiling of the new Nabholz Corporation's Wall of Honor memorial. The wall displays the names of the veterans who have worked in their corporation since it was founded in 1949. Nabholz further demonstrated its strong support for our veterans by donating $10,000 to the REBOOT Alliance, which is dedicated to helping our heroes and first responders deal with the stress and challenges they might face following a traumatic event.
Congratulations, Scott McLean
Congratulations to my good friend and Arkansan, Scott McLean, for being honored with the Marie Interfaith Civic Leadership Award, which is given annually to recognize people whose work addresses community issues in Arkansas. Scott founded the re-entry ministry program called the Pathway to Freedom in 2011. This program's goal is to change prison culture, break the cycle of recidivism in Arkansas, and help ex-prisoners successfully adjust back into their communities. Watch here.
Securing Our Borders
On the Rio Grande River with U.S. Border Patrol Agents in Del Rio, Texas and with Val Verde County Sheriff Joe Frank Martinez along the Rio Grande River.
Many of you have reached out with questions about the recent crisis on our Southwest border. I wanted to offer some additional background on this matter. After being briefed by Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen and reviewing documents from the Mexican government, it’s my understanding that each migrant in the caravan was offered asylum and a job in Mexico, but they all declined. Here are some additional myths and facts to provide clarity.
I'm actively engaged on this issue, and in May of this year, I visited the southern border for the fourth time and met with border patrol agents, state and local officials, including the Val Verde County judge and sheriff. I continue to build my understanding of the strategic challenges we face and what the House can do to deliver on our promise to better secure our borders and protect our families.
America is a nation of immigrants. We are the most generous and welcoming country in the world and we want people to come here, but the right way.
Arkansans are Focused on the Economy
Over the last four years, I have heard from central Arkansans like you who have told me that they're focused on the economy and results in Washington. On Friday, I talked to Tom Keene on Bloomberg TV about the importance of bipartisan success on immigration, health care reform that's affordable, and trade opportunities that allow our job creators on Main Street to thrive. If you would like to watch, see here.
Thank you for taking time to keep up with the work I'm doing on your behalf. If I can be of any assistance to you or your family, please reach out to my office at (501) 324-5941 or Hill.House.Gov.
