Dear Friends,

Federal taxes and Arkansas state taxes are due Wednesday, July 15th

This delay in tax-filing on the part of both the federal government and Arkansas allowed much-needed money to stay in the hands of Arkansans for longer during a truly difficult financial time.

Reminders:

  •  If you have yet to file, the IRS is advising taxpayers to file electronically, which you can do HERE.
  • If you are expecting a refund, the IRS requests that you choose the direct deposit option.
  • If you are requesting an extension, you must submit a completed form by July 15 to move your filing deadline to October 15. If you owe money, it must be paid by July 15 (payment plans are also available).
  • Until July 15, additions to traditional IRAs are deductible on a 2019 tax return.

For those who are experiencing financial hardship, you do have the option to request an extension for federal taxes that you owe HERE, and for state taxes HERE

I would encourage anyone who is expecting a refund to file as soon as possible rather than requesting an extension.

To reconcile the state deficit as a result of this delay in individual tax filing, Governor Hutchinson called a special session of the Arkansas state legislature which determined how to resolve this temporary loss of state income.

honoring the life of an American hero

WWII Veteran Jesse Whitley Passes Away at 100

Last week the world lost an amazing man who truly devoted his life to the service of others. Jesse Whitley was a WWII Army veteran who was one of the last living members of the First Special Forces Group commonly called the Devils Brigade or the Black Devils.

After his service in the armed forces, Mr. Whitely Arkansas served as a Baptist Minister in Arkansas for over 60 years.

My team and I worked closely with Mr. Whitley over the last few years after he reached out for assistance getting his pension restored, which we worked diligently to accomplish.

Mr. Whitley's service was recognized with numerous medals including the Congressional Gold Medal and the Norwegian Defense and Commemorative Medal, which the Norwegian Embassy awarded Mr. Whitley in 2016.

I salute Mr. Whitley for his tremendous life of service to our country, our community, and to the free world. May he Rest in Peace.

Preparing for a safe return to school

Discussion with Central Arkansas Superintendents and Administrators

The health and safety of our children is our main priority. As we head into another school year, I know that there are many questions surrounding whether or not schools in Arkansas should reopen, and how they can reopen safely.

To address some of these concerns, today I hosted a Facebook Live with Dr. Joe Fisher, Superintendent of Guy-Perkins School District, and Dr. Bryan Duffie, Superintendent of Jacksonville North Pulaski School District who discussed the plans for the fall.

Answering the census

Fulfilling Our Civic Responsibility

As we continue to practice safe social distancing, I encourage every citizen to do their civic duty and complete the official U.S. Census.

Article I of the Constitution directs that a Census be conducted every ten years. The U.S. Census helps local, state, and federal governments their citizens effectively.

This year, you will receive a U.S. Census letter providing you with an ID facilitating the online completion of the 2020 U.S. Census for you and your family.

sending letter to VP mike pence about COVID-19 testing

Combatting the Virus on all Fronts

As the COVID-19 infection rate is beginning to rise in states like Arkansas and more testing is necessary, Arkansas hospitals have had their internal testing capacity severely limited and are losing contracts with external labs due to a shortage of reagents necessary to perform COVID-19 tests.

I took action along with the rest of the Arkansas Congressional Delegation by writing to Vice President Mike Pence requesting that the White House Coronavirus Task Force take action to ensure that there is an adequate supply of reagents required for COVID-19 testing.
