Last week the world lost an amazing man who truly devoted his life to the service of others. Jesse Whitley was a WWII Army veteran who was one of the last living members of the First Special Forces Group commonly called the Devils Brigade or the Black Devils. After his service in the armed forces, Mr. Whitely Arkansas served as a Baptist Minister in Arkansas for over 60 years. My team and I worked closely with Mr. Whitley over the last few years after he reached out for assistance getting his pension restored, which we worked diligently to accomplish. Mr. Whitley's service was recognized with numerous medals including the Congressional Gold Medal and the Norwegian Defense and Commemorative Medal, which the Norwegian Embassy awarded Mr. Whitley in 2016. I salute Mr. Whitley for his tremendous life of service to our country, our community, and to the free world. May he Rest in Peace.
The health and safety of our children is our main priority. As we head into another school year, I know that there are many questions surrounding whether or not schools in Arkansas should reopen, and how they can reopen safely. To address some of these concerns, today I hosted a Facebook Live with Dr. Joe Fisher, Superintendent of Guy-Perkins School District, and Dr. Bryan Duffie, Superintendent of Jacksonville North Pulaski School District who discussed the plans for the fall. As we continue to practice safe social distancing, I encourage every citizen to do their civic duty and complete the official U.S. Census. Article I of the Constitution directs that a Census be conducted every ten years. The U.S. Census helps local, state, and federal governments their citizens effectively. This year, you will receive a U.S. Census letter providing you with an ID facilitating the online completion of the 2020 U.S. Census for you and your family.
As the COVID-19 infection rate is beginning to rise in states like Arkansas and more testing is necessary, Arkansas hospitals have had their internal testing capacity severely limited and are losing contracts with external labs due to a shortage of reagents necessary to perform COVID-19 tests. I took action along with the rest of the Arkansas Congressional Delegation by writing to Vice President Mike Pence requesting that the White House Coronavirus Task Force take action to ensure that there is an adequate supply of reagents required for COVID-19 testing. Recently I had the opportunity to recognize Kayle Browning on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives. Kayle was selected to represent Arkansas and the United States at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics as a part of Team USA’s Olympic Trap Team. To watch the full video, click HERE or on the image below. Kayle is from Wooster, Arkansas, graduated from Greenbrier High School and went on to attend the University of Central Arkansas. Please join me in congratulating Kayle on this tremendous achievement. I am looking forward to watching her compete. It is my honor to represent you in Congress. Please contact me at (501) 324-5941 or Hill.House.Gov if I may be of service to you. Sincerely, Representative French Hill |
