Dear Friends,
Since coming to Congress, I have fought to support common-sense immigration policies that will enforce our laws and secure our borders. Immigration policy is an important issue facing our Nation, and I wanted to provide you with an update on the House’s work to ensure our laws are followed, criminals are brought to justice, and our borders are secured.
On September 14, 2017, the House passed H.R. 3697, the Criminal Alien Gang Member Removal Act, with my support. This bill ensures that alien gang members are kept off our streets by barring them from coming to the United States and detaining and removing them if they are criminal gang members or participate in gang activity. Additionally, this bill ensures that criminal gang members are not eligible for immigration benefits, such as asylum, special immigration juvenile status, and temporary protected status. Currently, it is not possible to deport gang members until they are convicted of an independent crime.
Those who abuse our laws and bring havoc and pain to American cities and our citizens must be held accountable and brought to justice. This bill seeks to ensure that happens. I am hopeful my colleagues in the Senate will act swiftly to pass this commonsense proposal and send it to the president’s desk for signature.
Sincerely,
Representative French Hill
