Dear Friends,

Yesterday, I moderated a discussion with the Librarian of Congress, Dr. Carla Hayden, and the Library of Congress’ Director of Educational Outreach, Lee Ann Potter, about the upcoming school year, and what the Library of Congress has done and continues to do to support education across the country.

As Arkansas's students and educators prepare to start one of the most uniquely challenging school years, drawing on all available resources is key. Since the COVID-19 pandemic closed schools this past spring, the Library of Congress has been providing helpful online resources catered to distance learning. For the new school year, they redoubled their efforts and will be offering online solutions to help parents, teachers, and students succeed academically.

Some of the best resources offered by the Library of Congress include:

Resources for Family Engagement from the Library of Congress that include interactive author programs, activity kits, and video library stories.

Activity kits are designed with age-appropriate materials that engage students to learn more about history, geography, music, and art.

One of Dr. Hayden's favorites is called Cooking Up History where you and your children can recreate a recipe from 100 years ago preserved in Chronicling America, the Library's searchable database of historic newspapers, or from one of the Library of Congress' thousands of cookbooks and recipes. Like Thomas Jefferson's recipes for macaroni and cheese and ice cream, or Rosa Parks' recipe for "featherlite pancakes" with peanut butter.

The Library of Congress has a biweekly blog focused on helping educators find inspiration for lesson plans, ways to immerse students in history, and questions to ask students to encourage them to think deeply about the lessons.

If you're looking for a way to connect with the largest library in the world on your mobile device, you're in luck! The Library of Congress offers its digitized collection of iconic photos, historic maps, books, films, newspapers, manuscripts, and sound recordings on their LOC Collections App.

deadline extension to People with Children Receive $500 Economic Impact Payments

Provide Your Information by September 30th

If you receive Social Security, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), and Railroad Retirement Board (RRB) benefits are eligible for an Economic Impact Payment (EIP) with a dependent, and have not used the Non-Filers tool to provide information on your child, you must register online by September 30th using the Non-Filers: Enter Payment Info Here tool.

Remember, anyone who filed or plans to file either a 2018 or 2019 tax return should file the tax return and not use this tool.

For those unable to access the Non-Filers tool, they may submit a simplified paper return following the procedures described in this FAQ on IRS.gov.

Any beneficiary who misses the September 30th deadline will need to wait until next year and claim it as a credit on their 2020 federal income tax return.

Those who received their original EIP by direct deposit will also have any supplemental payment direct deposited to the same account. Others will receive a check.

Eligible recipients can check the status of their payments using the Get My Payment tool on IRS.gov. In addition, a notice verifying the $500-per-child supplemental payment will be sent to each recipient and should be retained with other tax records.

visiting baptist health with Senator John Boozman

Thanking our Conway Health Heroes

Thank you to every health care worker who is on the front lines fighting against the COVID-19 pandemic.

I was glad to have the opportunity to thank some of these heroes in person today at Baptist Health in Conway and to congratulate Laura for being given the Healthcare Hero Award. Senator John Boozman and I heard directly from these doctors, nurses, and staff about what they face every day, and what is needed to help them do their jobs effectively.

Thank you to Director of Nursing Terri, Dr. Vinson, CEO of Baptist Health-Conway Tim Bowen, Chief Nursing Officer April, and all of the healthcare professionals present today for hosting us and speaking with us about what Congress can do to help combat this virus.

Recognizing those who built our nation

Submit Your Candidate to be Honored in the National Garden of American Heroes

Recently, the U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI) created a web portal to allow you to submit your suggestions for statues that should be included in the National Garden of American Heroes.

This garden was created to honor Americans who have made a significant contribution to the country and will be open to the public before the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

The president declared that the garden shall include statues of John Adams, Susan B. Anthony, Clara Barton, Daniel Boone, Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, Henry Clay, Davy Crockett, Frederick Douglass, Amelia Earhart, Benjamin Franklin, Billy Graham, Alexander Hamilton, Thomas Jefferson, Martin Luther King, Jr., Abraham Lincoln, Douglas MacArthur, Dolley Madison, James Madison, Christa McAuliffe, Audie Murphy, George S. Patton, Jr., Ronald Reagan, Jackie Robinson, Betsy Ross, Antonin Scalia, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Harriet Tubman, Booker T. Washington, George Washington, and Orville and Wilbur Wright.

To submit your idea for an American who should be honored in the Garden of American Heroes, send an email to withamericanheroesinfo@ios.doi.gov.

It is my honor to represent you in Congress. Please contact me at (501) 324-5941 or Hill.House.Gov if I may be of service to you.

Sincerely,
Representative French Hill
