Dear Friends,
There is a long-standing tradition in American politics that partisan fighting ends at the water’s edge. Instead of uniting behind the successful strike to take out the mastermind of the world’s leading state-sponsor of terror, Democrat leaders are attacking the president in their continued effort to undermine him at every turn.
Over the past few months, in the face of greater and more violent Iranian attacks orchestrated by General Soleimani against the United States and our allies, President Trump has shown restraint.
The killing of an American contractor, the orchestration of the storming and destruction at the American Embassy, and the planning of imminent attacks against U.S. troops and diplomats were the final straw.
Last week, the president reiterated that the United States does not seek to start a war with Iran, and his recent actions have sent an unambiguous signal to Iran and their proxies: if they harm Americans, there will be a high price to pay.
The Iranian regime has been crippled by strategic economic sanctions, and there are some indications that they do not seek further escalation following the death of General Soleimani. I support the decision to continue our policy of maximum pressure by introducing new sanctions on the Iranian regime and calling on our international allies in NATO to step up and take a larger role in the Middle East.
As a terror state, Iran is no friend of the United States or our allies; for three decades Iran has been a leading state sponsor of terrorism. Over these three decades, the United States and our allies have faced greater and more violent Iranian or Iranian proxy attacks orchestrated by terror General Soleimani.
In addition, it was reported that just last week Iranian security forces fired both live ammunition and tear gas to disperse demonstrators protesting the Islamic Republic’s initial denial that it shot down a Ukrainian jetliner. Videos show a crowd of demonstrators near Azadi (“freedom”) Square fleeing as a tear gas canister landed among them. Tehran’s police chief, Gen. Hossein Rahimi, denied that his officers opened fire at the crowd. The senseless aggression by the Iranian regime against its people must end. I will continue to stand with the people of Iran against the corrupt and violent mullahs.
The provocateur is Iran, not President Trump. The assassin is Soleimani, not President Trump. The destabilizing force in the region is Iran, not the United States. Watch my full remarks from the House floor below, or click

Speaker Pelosi knows that President Trump's strike against Iran’s architect of terror was well within his Article II authority to defend the nation as Commander-in-Chief. She supported the same legal authorization that President Obama used to conduct more than 500 drone strikes against terrorist targets in the Middle East.
Instead of pushing misguided messaging bills that embolden America’s enemies, we must stand united against terrorist leaders who are a direct threat to our national security.
Sincerely,
Representative French Hill
