U.S. Congressman French Hill
Dear Friends,

Last month, we commemorated the 50th Anniversary of the untimely passing of our nation’s most celebrated Civil Rights hero, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr. King is famously quoted saying “injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”

This principle could not be more applicable than to the nightmare of human rights atrocities currently happening in Syria by the ruthless dictator, Bashar al-Assad. Assad has demonstrated what I consider to be the most terrible of atrocities against his own citizens. In a world where democracy and peace are the ultimate objectives of government, this is completely unacceptable.

Recently, I had the privilege to visit the Syria exhibit at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C., an exhibit dedicated to highlighting the vicious attacks against the people of Syria, and a pressing call to action from leadership around the world to combat these evils. Bashar al-Assad has two objectives in Syria: divide and conquer.

A young Syrian girl in a refugee camp holding a note that I wrote in the Holocaust Museum, encouraging the Syrian people to remain resilient.

By regaining control of the land occupied by real or perceived threats to the tyranny perpetrated by the Syrian government and sowing seeds of discord amongst the rebels to encourage more violence and bloodshed, he has become the embodiment of everything in opposition to democracy.

For me, this ongoing travesty isn’t purely political. It’s personal.

I was blessed to be accompanied to the museum by my friend, Mouaz Moustafa, an Arkansan, and the Executive Director for the Syrian Emergency Task Force. Mouaz fled from Syria when he was a child, and although he and his family never stood in opposition to Assad’s regime, several of his kin have been arrested.

Pictured here with Mouaz at the Washington D.C. Holocaust Museum, talking about the challenges facing the citizens of Syria.

Motivated by the tragedy that’s affected his life, Mouaz has dedicated his life to fighting for the implantation of pro-democratic policies in Syria. His dedication to this challenging mission is inspiring. He recently wrote me about a young girl pictured above in Syria whose father was murdered by Assad, but is still hopeful that the United States will commit itself to the right side of history and stand with the victims of this brutal regime.

I call on the Senate to pass the Caesar Syria Protection Act, which seeks to impose sanctions on supporters of Syria’s Assad regime, encourage negotiations to end ongoing atrocities, and support prosecution of war criminals. I gave a floor speech in support of this important legislation. Together with the United Nations and our allies, our country needs to refocus its efforts in ending the evil, violence, and atrocity taking place in Syria. I’m committed to working alongside my colleagues to best serve the interests of Arkansans and Americans while ensuring that grave human rights violations such as the ones taking place in Syria are properly addressed by Congress.

Thank you for taking time to keep up with the work I'm doing on your behalf. If I can be any assistance to you or your family, please reach out to my office at (501) 324-5941 or go to my website at hill.house.gov

Sincerely,

Representative French Hill
