Dear Friend,
The situation in Afghanistan continues to deteriorate, and I acted to make sure the Taliban terrorists do not receive access to millions of dollars by way of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
I led a letter, co-signed by 17 Republican members of Congress on the Financial Services Committee, to U.S. Department of Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen urging her to intervene at the IMF to ensure that no allocated Special Drawing Rights (SDRs) are made available to a Taliban-led Afghanistan on August 17, 2021, and the next day, the IMF moved to not allow Taliban-led Afghanistan to access its currency reserves. This will make America safer.
President Biden's policies have created a logistical nightmare for the Afghans who fought alongside American troops, and for the women and children now fleeing for their lives on the streets as the Taliban seek out those who served the United States. President Biden overruled the guidance of military professionals, and now there are 4,500 troops at the Kabul airport ensuring safe passage for those the United States continues to evacuate. This has been a foreign policy disaster.
I will continue to monitor this situation closely and work with my colleagues in the House to assure proper oversight is carried out.
