For the first time, drug related overdose deaths have 100,000 people in a year-long span. This is 100,000 of our friends, family, and neighbors.
In September, I introduced the Preventing Overdoses and Saving Lives Act with my friend, Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-MI). This bipartisan bill will create a grant program allowing states and localities to conduct research on the opioid crisis, create a strategic plan to respond to the crisis, and implement co-prescribing under certain circumstances – increasing access to naloxone, a life-saving medication that can reverse an opioid overdose. In short, this bill will save lives. For more information regarding the bill, click here.
This holiday season, I will be thinking about the 100,000 Americans we lost this year. These deaths are preventable, and it is on us to take action before more lives are lost.
