Dear Friends,

There is a special 9/11 memorial in the U.S. Capitol Building that not all tours pass by. Located off the east side of the Rotunda is a memorial that reads:

“In memory of the passengers and crew of United Airlines Flight 93, whose brave sacrifice on September 11, 2001, not only saved countless lives but may have saved the U.S. Capitol from destruction.”

On this day 18 years ago, United Flight 93 took off nearly 25 minutes late, and was hijacked 46 minutes after takeoff. That delay gave the passengers and crew of Flight 93 the time they needed to learn about the fate of the other three airplanes hijacked earlier on that dark day.

They refused to let the hijackers succeed and collectively decided to act, saving an untold number of lives. When Flight 93 went down in Pennsylvania it was only 20 minutes away from its probable target—the U.S. Capitol Building.

I thank the 40 selfless heroes listed on this memorial who gave their lives so that many others would be saved. On this 18^th anniversary of 9/11, I pray that their love of country will be an eternal source of courage and strength for our nation and generations of patriots yet unborn.
