U.S. Congressman French Hill
Dear Friends,

Much of my professional life was spent in banking, with the last 15 years spent running a community bank in Little Rock. It was here that I saw first-hand the damaging effects the Dodd-Frank Act had on smaller banks and the customers who had traditionally come to us seeking capital and access to credit. In part, this is what inspired me to seek public office and use my 30-plus years in the banking industry to provide sound input in creating financial regulations that make sense for the American people.

At our bank, our primary customers were small business owners, families wanting to purchase a home, or those looking to start a business. In 2010, Dodd-Frank was signed into law with the promise of helping smaller financial institutions thrive and ending "too big to fail," while pumping life back into a sputtering economy.

However, since then, none of that has happened. Instead, the biggest banks have gotten bigger, with "too big to fail" essentially being written into the law. Instead, "too small to succeed" has manifested and created a banking vacuum in Small and Medium Town, USA. Our country has experienced the slowest economic growth since World War II, and business formation is touching Carter-era lows. Dodd-Frank hasn't lived up to its promise, and it is time to move beyond it.

As the Whip on the House Financial Services Committee, I will be working with members of our Committee to craft a bill that will actually meet the needs of consumers and help spur economic growth. Through our Financial CHOICE Act, we will be reforming the misdirected regulatory policies that have hurt consumers and business of all sizes.

Committee Chairman Jeb Hensarling and the rest of the members of the Committee are seeking input as we design and then debate the Financial CHOICE Act. If you are a banker, a consumer, or an industry expert who has a story about how Dodd-Frank has affected you, we want to hear it. Please send those stories to me at French.Hill@mail.house.gov with the subject line "Dodd-Frank Anecdote." Your experiences are important to us, and we want to make sure that they are captured as we retool regulatory policy so that it positively affects economic growth in our country.

Sincerely,

Representative French Hill

Rep. Hill is looking for summer interns in his Washington, D.C., Little Rock, AR, and Conway, AR offices. Interns will work in a fast-paced environment, gaining valuable exposure and knowledge of the legislative process and the U.S. Congress.

Interns also will have the opportunity to conduct legislative research and assist with correspondence, as well as attend Capitol Hill briefings, congressional hearings, and press events. Social media and other communications experience is a plus.

Honoring a 'True Southern Gentleman'

Last week, Rep. Hill went on the House floor to remember the life of Townsend Wolfe, who passed away earlier this year at the age of 81.

Mr. Wolfe served as director and chief curator of the Arkansas Arts Center in Little Rock for 34 years until his retirement in 2002.

On the floor, Rep. Hill stated:

"Townsend’s love of art extended beyond the walls of his galleries, bringing beauty into the lives of countless Arkansans. He continued as an advisor to the Arkansas Arts Center Foundation after his retirement, uniting philanthropy and culture in every task he took on.

"Townsend leaves behind a legacy of warmth and passion, and his contributions to the Natural State will continue to live on in the Arts Center that he leaves behind."

VA's Golden Fleece Record

Last week, Rep. Hill handed the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) its fifth Golden Fleece Award for wasting hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars on a poorly designed relocation benefits program for Senior Executive Employees.

In his letter to now-VA Secretary  David Shulkin, Rep. Hill wrote:

“The [Office of Inspector General (OIG)] includes critical recommendations to reassess the capabilities of the VA’s human resources Smart system, to ‘review and update procedures,’ and to ‘develop internal controls…to monitor compliance with developing succession plans to reduce VA’s reliance on retention incentives.’ I urge you, especially in your likely new role as VA Secretary, to review this audit and work to adhere to the VAOIG’s recommendations to ensure that critical funds for our Nation’s veterans are not wasted on these payment programs.

“Our federal agencies must be good stewards of our federal tax dollars, and I am committed to ensuring effective practices at our Nation’s federal agencies. Should you require any additional authority from Congress to address these concerns, I urge you to notify us as soon as possible. I thank you for your consideration and look forward to working with you to address this important issue.”
