Hill: Speaker Pelosi’s Police Reform Legislation Promotes Partisanship, Not Progress |
WASHINGTON D.C. — Today, Rep. French Hill (AR-02), issued the following statement upon the passage of H.R. 7120, the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act.
“George Floyd did not have to die. He was not resisting arrest, and his murder was a defining moment in a movement against police brutality and against discrimination. Let me be clear: there is no place in our society for discrimination and brutality of any kind, and I support reforms to policing that increase accountability and transparency and that ultimately keep safe citizens and public safety officials alike. Public safety officials are a critical part of our communities, but too many Americans have lost confidence in some of these institutions. There is a role for Congress in rebuilding that faith, but it won’t happen overnight.
“Speaker Pelosi missed another opportunity for meaning reform by completely shutting out Republicans in passing this bill – which is baffling given that, across the nation millions have called for more dialogue and consensus. Rather than negotiating in good faith with the minority party, the Speaker, instead, spent precious time passing a bill that will never become law. That’s not leadership, and that’s why I could not vote in favor of her legislation today. Americans deserve more from Speaker Pelosi, the leader of the People’s House.
“I am proud to be a co-sponsor of the JUSTICE Act, the House version of Sen. Tim Scott’s (R-SC) legislation that would promote better police training, accountability, and transparency in our communities. This is a good bill that has 47 co-sponsors in the Senate and 148 co-sponsors in the House and that is based upon reforms suggested by President Obama’s policing reform task force as well as the conservative Heritage Foundation. That should have been the starting point for the Speaker. Now I hope both sides can work in the Senate for a consensus that can be signed into law.”
